Coffee arrived in this region in the 1940s as a minor lowland crop. By the 1970s it had risen to become the main economic driver, powered by high prices for Typica and Bourbon. The 2011 coffee leaf rust crisis destroyed many farms, but resilient growers rebuilt by planting rust-resistant varieties alongside cherished traditional ones.
Through Cup of Excellence recognition and the San Vicente mill, producers refined their methods and began exporting standout micro-lots. Coffee is now the heart of the local economy and culture. In 2017, Geisha was introduced in Santa Barbara, bringing exciting new possibilities to small farms. Tasting Notes: Bright and lively with notes of clementine, papaya, and red apple.
